Hilo City Guide
Hilo is Hawaii's second largest city, and the largest on The Big Island. It's location nestled between Hilo Bay and the dormant Mauna Kea volcano makes it a great home base for your Big Island adventures. Hilo International Airport, University of Hawaii Hilo Campus, and its close proximity to Volcanoes National Park, help to make Hilo the center of activities on the Big Island. Hilo and the land and seas around it offer nearly any type of adventure activity one can imagine.
Hiking, camping, cycling, fishing, kayaking, sailing, and nearly any board sport you can think of, are all available in and around Hilo. One activity that no adventurous traveler will want to miss is snow skiing ! Thats right skiing ! If you go to the big island in the winter and are willing to hike, or have means to hire a helicopter ride, you can ski or snow board down the slopes of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, both of which rise so high above sea level that they can actually get several meters of snow in the winter. What traveler who truly seeks adventure could resist the idea of skiing and surfing in the same day ?
