Haleiwa City Guide
Haleiwa Known around the world for big wave surfing, is named for one of the first hotels on the island of Oahu. Today Haleiwa is Hawaii's surf mecca but a hundred years ago it was a bustling resort town. Early in the twentieth century Haleiwa was an even more popular destination than Waikiki. Before Waikiki had a single hotel, the Haleiwa hotel was a popular resort for visitors from far and wide. The town that developed around the resort and the rail line built to transport visitors from Honolulu, eventually took on the name of the hotel that helped found it.
With Waiemea Bay, Sunset Beach, and Pipeline surf breaks, all within a few minutes of Haleiwa it is easy to see how it has become a world famous surf destination. The winter surf on Oahu's north shore is some of the worlds best, and most dangerous. Many of the worlds most renowned pro surfers call Haleiwa home. The North shore of Oahu hosts some of the biggest surf contests, including Triple crown events, and the Eddie Aikau, where any wave under twenty feet in height is considered too small to score.
